Undercurrent is part of my ongoing exploration of the space between abstraction and recognition. I begin without a fixed image in mind, building layers of color, marks, and shapes and allowing the painting to suggest its own direction. As forms emerge, I respond to what I see rather than forcing the work back toward an original plan.

This painting grew from an abstract arrangement of cool greens and blues, gradually suggesting the movement of water and shifting reflections. I left parts of the original marks visible, allowing the image to hover between a recognizable landscape and something more ambiguous.

I began this painting without a fixed image in mind, allowing blocks of color and unexpected shapes to lead the way. As the painting developed, hints of a coastal landscape began to emerge. I was drawn to the tension between the solid, fractured forms and the open areas of light.
Flowers have long been a source of inspiration in my work. In Poppy Perfection, I used expressive line, layered color, and simplified forms to capture the energy and movement of poppies in bloom. Rather than focusing on detail, I was interested in creating a sense of rhythm, atmosphere, and joy.

The arrangement did not want to be controlled. It wanted to grow, spill, and shift. So I let the painting follow that energy — layering, lifting, and refining until the whole surface felt alive. What began as a still life became a record of change and trusting the moment when a painting tells you it has found its own voice.
In the end, this painting is less about perfection than presence — a reminder that the most memorable things often arrive softly, in color, texture, and light.

This abstract oil painting explores memory, atmosphere, and the emotional weight of place rather than a specific landscape. Built through layered color, transparent passages, and intuitive mark-making, the piece moves between suggestion and ambiguity, allowing forms to emerge and dissolve across the surface. Vertical shapes hint at trees, reflections, or shifting light, while soft greens, blues, and earth tones create a sense of quiet movement and depth.
Rather than describing a scene directly, I’m interested in creating an experience—something felt more than explained. I allow the painting to evolve gradually through layering, editing, and response, trusting color and gesture to guide the composition. The result is a balance between structure and spontaneity, where recognizable elements remain just out of reach and the viewer is invited to bring their own memories and associations into the work.

This painting is based on the work of a Florida artist whose paintings I admire. I purchased one from her several years ago at an art festival we both displayed at in South Portland, ME. Her name isn’t coming to me at the moment but I want to credit her for most of the composition.
I love the way the flowers, blue vessels, and decorative ironwork come together in this painting. The curling lines and strong blues give the piece a sense of movement while the flowers keep it grounded in the familiar world of still life.
