The Beauty of Uncertainty

One of the things painting has taught me is that confidence rarely comes first. Every meaningful painting I've made has begun with a little uncertainty.

Most of us imagine confidence as something we need before we begin—that one day we'll feel ready, certain, or talented enough to tackle the painting, submit the application, or try something new. But in my experience, it usually works the other way around.

“Confidence grows because we begin.”

Every painting asks me to step into uncertainty. There are moments when I have no idea where it's going, and for me, that's part of the process. If I waited until I knew exactly what would happen, very few paintings would ever get started.

I've learned to trust the next brushstroke more than the final outcome.

The same is true beyond the studio. Whether you're building a painting practice, learning a new skill, or chasing a dream, progress comes from showing up consistently—not perfectly. Small efforts have a way of becoming something much larger than we expect.

So if you're standing at the edge of something uncertain, don't wait for confidence to arrive. Begin where you are. You may discover that the confidence you're looking for is waiting a few steps down the path.
