I’m drawn to the contrast between the softness of roses and the sharp, unruly shapes of their stems and leaves. I began this painting with the flowers, but as the painting developed, I became more interested in the spaces between them—the dark lines, unexpected shapes, and areas where the flowers almost disappear into the background. I let those discoveries guide the painting rather than trying to preserve my original idea. For me, that tension between beauty and imperfection is what gives a painting its life.
